چکیده

This monograph has been compiled by members of the Paleogene Planktonic Foraminifera Working Group (hereafter referred to as the Working Group) of the International Subcommission on Paleogene Stratigraphy, International Union of Geological Sciences. It is the second such work in a projected series of three, the first being the Atlas of Paleocene Planktonic Foraminifera published by Smithsonian Institution Press (Olsson and others, 1999). Here we extend that effort to encompass the full flowering of the adaptive radiation of planktonic foraminifera in the Eocene. The atlas has its origins in 1987, when the Working Group was formed. At that time it was clear that a major revision of the Paleogene planktonic foraminifera was necessary in order to synthesize a highly dispersed body of literature and to develop new taxonomic concepts, based, as far as possible, on scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At the first formal meeting a decision was made to focus on the production of an initial Paleocene atlas. Since that work was sent to press in 1996, our efforts have been directed almost exclusively at unravelling the taxonomic complexities of the Eocene planktonic foraminifera. The Working Group’s practice has been to meet once or twice a year to coordinate efforts, debate the latest Chapter 1

Biostratigraphy and paleoecology of Paleogen rocks based on calcareous nannofossil in Kafaz section, east Iran

In this study, the assemblage of calcareous nannofossils has been investigated in long and continuous deposits from a Kafaz section in Eastern Iran. A systematic study of calcareous nannofossils has indicated 39 nannofossils species. In order to the age determination of Kafaz's deposits, a revised zonation for the Eocene is used. Based on it, the Early-Middle Eocene deposits of Kafaz section is...

Origin of the Eocene Planktonic Foraminifer Hantkenina by Gradual Evolution

Hantkenina is a distinctive planktonic foraminiferal genus characterized by the presence of tubulospines (robust hollow projections) on each adult chamber, from Middle and Upper Eocene marine sediments worldwide. Here we illustrate its evolutionary origin using c. 150 specimens from 30 stratigraphic intervals in two sediment cores from Tanzania. The specimens, which span an estimated time inter...

The Gurpi Formation (Upper Santonian – Upper Maastrichtian, Marun Oil Field) Biostratigraphy and Paleoecology Investigation

The Gurpi Formation, one of the geologycal units of the Zagros Basin, stretches with in the Folded Zagros in the provinces of Khuzestan, Lorestan, and Fars,in southwest Iran. In all 525 samples were collected from five stratigraphic sectiones of the Gurpi Formation in Dezful embayment Zone for studying biostratigraphy. Totally 47 species from 23 Planktonic foraminifera genera were recognized in...

Larger benthic foraminifera from the Middle Eocene

Larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) are common and diverse throughout the Paleogene sediments of southern Tanzania, but have previously been little studied. A recent programme of onshore drilling known as the Tanzania Drilling Project has recovered large proportion of this succession for palaeoclimatic and palaeontological study. The sediment is largely a hemipelagic clay with secondary gravity s...

Stratigraphy of Cretaceous to Lower Pliocene sediments in the northern part of Cyprus based on comparative 87Sr/86Sr isotopic, nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal dating

New age data from Sr isotope analysis and both planktonic foraminifera and nannofossils are presented and discussed here for the Upper Eocene–Upper Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Değirmenlik (Kythrea) Group. New dating is also given of some Cretaceous and Pliocene sediments. In a revised stratigraphy the Değirmenlik (Kythrea) Group is divided into ten formations. Different Upper Miocene forma...
